Morocco Extends Wheat Tariffs as Global Wheat Prices Surge

Morocco has prolonged a 170% customs duty on soft wheat imports until 31 August to give priority to the domestic harvest, which has been delayed by labor shortages, outdated equipment and the Eid al‑Adha holiday. The government expects the wheat crop to reach nine million tonnes this season, but only about 500,000 tonnes have been collected so far, well below the target of 1.5 million tonnes.

At the same time, wheat prices on international markets have jumped sharply. The Chicago Board of Trade saw a 4.1% rise, reaching a three‑year high, and prices are up about 19% for July. The surge is attributed to the ongoing conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, Russian restrictions on grain shipments, and adverse weather in major producing regions such as France, Germany, and North Dakota, USA. Traders warn that these factors could tighten global wheat supplies in the coming months.
