Morocco faces energy dependency despite smart grid research growth

Research from Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) indicates that while Morocco has become a hub for sophisticated smart electrical grid research, this academic output has not yet resulted in a structural transformation of the nation’s energy system.

Between 2014 and 2023, Morocco’s national electricity production more than doubled, rising from 1,022 to 2,388 kilotons of oil equivalent (ktoe). This growth was primarily driven by wind power, which tripled to 1,702 ktoe, and a rebound in solar energy production to 549 ktoe.

Despite increased production, energy demand continues to outpace domestic capabilities. Total energy consumption, including imports, rose from 18,710 to 22,726 ktoe during the same period, maintaining an energy dependency rate between 85% and 91%. Projections suggest consumption could reach approximately 25,500 ktoe by 2030, while domestic production is estimated at only 3,400 ktoe.

Research priorities have focused heavily on energy management, optimization, and predictive forecasting. However, studies on policy, regulation, and smart-city integration remain minimal, representing a gap in the current academic landscape.
