Morocco faces food insecurity, rising costs, and climate funding gaps
Morocco is facing significant challenges regarding food security, rising living costs, and climate adaptation funding. According to the 2026 Global Hunger Index, the country ranks 47th globally with a score of 9. Approximately 2.3 million people, or 6.5% of the population, suffer from malnutrition. Notably, 13.7% of children under five experience stunting, and the child mortality rate before age five stands at 1.6%. These issues are exacerbated by water scarcity and a reliance on importing staples like wheat and vegetable oils while simultaneously exporting water-intensive crops.
Economic pressures are also mounting for Moroccan households. Data from the High Commission for Planning indicates that 95.9% of families reported an increase in food prices over the last year, while 76.3% stated their standard of living has deteriorated. Most households (77.9%) expect food prices to continue rising in the coming months.
Furthermore, the 2026 Climate Adaptation Finance Index by Bread for the World places Morocco 57th out of 129 developing nations. The country is categorized within the 'acute funding shortage' group, receiving significantly less international finance for climate adaptation than its environmental risks justify.
