Morocco faces SME stability risks due to founder succession challenges
Moroccan small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face a significant stability risk as a large generation of founders approaches retirement. With over 95% of national companies under family management and approximately 150,000 structures led by founders over the age of fifty, the issue of entrepreneurial continuity has become a major economic challenge.
According to accountant Issam El Maguiri, nearly 40% of family businesses have not prepared a succession plan. This lack of preparation is attributed to cultural and emotional factors, where business owners often view the company as a personal legacy rather than a transferable asset. This delay in planning can lead to urgent, pressured decisions, resulting in undervalued sales or the liquidation of activities and the loss of valuable expertise.
