Morocco gains UN Security Council backing for Sahara autonomy plan and tops soft‑power index

The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2797 on 31 October 2025, endorsing principles that respect Morocco’s legitimate rights in the Western Sahara and calling for the formulation of a detailed autonomy proposal as the sole basis for future negotiations. King Mohammed VI highlighted the resolution as a decisive step, thanking the United States, United Kingdom, Spain and France for their constructive positions.

In the same period, the Global Soft Power Index 2026 placed Morocco first among Maghreb countries and third across Africa with a score of 40.6 points. The ranking reflects the kingdom’s longstanding diplomatic outreach, institutional stability, economic openness, cultural influence and South‑South cooperation, all driven by a strategic vision advanced by King Mohammed VI since his accession.

Together, the UN endorsement and the soft‑power recognition underscore Morocco’s growing international stature and its ongoing effort to resolve the Western Sahara issue through a political settlement.
