Morocco hosts first US-led long-range cruise missile test at AMTEC
The United States selected the Kingdom of Morocco as the sole international site for testing advanced intercept missile systems under a new initiative aimed at accelerating weapon development. Four test ranges were also designated within the United States, but the Moroccan location provides a rapid‑access venue for defense companies.
At the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Morocco, the first real‑world launch of a long‑range, low‑cost cruise missile was conducted. The demonstration, organized by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) in partnership with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, showcased the ability to quickly move battlefield requirements to innovative industry solutions. The test also marked the successful field trial of the startup Covariant Industries' "Antham" interceptor missile.
The cooperation underscores Morocco’s growing role as a strategic partner for U.S. defense activities in Africa and highlights the joint effort to streamline the transition from research to operational deployment of new military technologies.
