Morocco implements new migration controls and receives EU support

Morocco is implementing several distinct initiatives regarding migration and travel. Following recent events in Ceuta, Moroccan authorities have increased scrutiny of Tunisian and Algerian citizens. Travelers at Mohammed V International Airport are facing additional identity checks and are being asked to provide proof of temporary stays, such as hotel reservations and return tickets.

In response to migration challenges, the European Commission has announced plans to increase financial support for Morocco. Between 2021 and 2024, Morocco received approximately €222 million for border protection and migration management, with an additional €190 million expected by the end of the 2027 budget cycle.

Regarding educational trends, a study from Germany's Federal Statistical Office indicates that Morocco ranks fifth among non-EU and UK countries for educational migration to Germany, with approximately 37,000 Moroccans residing there for study purposes.

Simultaneously, the Tanger Med port is managing the Marhaba 2026 operation, which facilitates the return of Moroccan expatriates. The port has implemented measures to ensure fluid transit for travelers, including pre-arrival formalities at the Méditerranée rest area to reduce congestion.
