Morocco increases lemon exports to Spain amid supply shortages
Moroccan lemon exports to Spain surged by nearly 900% between October 2025 and July 2026, reaching 1,600 tonnes valued at over $2.3 million. This volume is more than double the cumulative amount recorded over the previous nine seasons.
Spain has become the primary European destination for Moroccan lemons, surpassing the United Kingdom and France. The surge follows an 18.6% decline in Spain's domestic harvest compared to the previous year, which led to supply shortages and rising prices. While Morocco has joined traditional suppliers like South Africa and Chile in the Spanish market, analysts suggest its long-term position remains uncertain as the increase appears driven by exceptional market conditions and Spanish crop failures.
