Morocco mining accident kills three workers in Khénifra

Three miners died following the explosion of an unexploded old mine at the Ighrem Ousar mine within the Jbel Aouam mining complex near Merirt, in the Khénifra province of Morocco. The incident occurred on Friday, September 25, when a rock drilling machine struck the old mine during underground drilling operations.

The victims have been identified as 29-year-old Mohammed and 40-year-old Abdallah, who died at the scene, and 45-year-old Ismail, who succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

The Moroccan Human Rights League has condemned the incident, citing a lack of occupational health and safety standards, harsh working conditions, and insufficient oversight. The organization held both the state and the operating company responsible, calling for a serious and impartial investigation to determine liability and ensure compensation for the victims' families.

Following the tragedy, dozens of miners held a protest march covering approximately six kilometers to demand improved safety measures. While local authorities intervened to facilitate dialogue between company officials and workers, human rights groups and the United Socialist Party have continued to demand transparency and a formal investigation into the recurring safety failures at the site.
