Morocco negotiates acquisition of Israeli David’s Sling missile defense system

Morocco is in negotiations with Israel to acquire the David’s Sling missile defense system, according to reports. The system, developed jointly by Israel’s Rafael and the United States’ Raytheon, is designed to intercept ballistic missiles and cruise missiles at ranges of up to 300 kilometers.

If the deal is finalized, it would significantly enhance Morocco’s aerial defense capabilities and multi-layered protection architecture. While the system is not an offensive weapon designed to attack Spanish territories, its acquisition could have strategic implications for Spain’s defense planning regarding the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The potential purchase is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to modernize its military by diversifying suppliers, including technology from the United States, Israel, France, and China. The move is also seen as a response to regional territorial rivalries, particularly with Algeria. As the system involves American technology, Washington may play a role in the discussions regarding the sale.
