Morocco negotiates purchase of Israeli LORA ballistic missiles
Morocco is in advanced negotiations with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to acquire the LORA tactical ballistic missile system, according to reports from the Israeli site Netsev. The system features a range of 400 to 500 kilometers and utilizes advanced GPS/INS guidance, offering high precision with a margin of error of less than 10 meters.
The potential deal is viewed as a move to bolster Morocco's offensive capabilities and shift the regional balance of power amid an escalating arms race with Algeria. This follows previous military cooperation under the Abraham Accords, including Morocco's $500 million purchase of Barak MX air defense systems and PULS precision missile systems.
LORA missiles are characterized by high-altitude ballistic trajectories and supersonic speeds, concluding in a near-vertical descent that makes them difficult for air defense systems to intercept. Morocco reportedly intends to operate the LORA system independently alongside its expected acquisition of American HIMARS systems.
