Morocco pilots heat‑reducing porous pavement in Marrakech and Agadir

Morocco is trialing a new porous pavement, described as a "foam sidewalk," in the cities of Marrakech and Agadir. The material lets rainwater infiltrate through a network of voids, storing it in underlying soil and allowing gradual evaporation. This evaporation absorbs heat, lowering road surface temperatures and mitigating the urban heat‑island effect without additional energy consumption.

The system also improves road safety and comfort by providing a rougher surface that enhances tire grip and reduces traffic noise. By diverting a portion of runoff into the ground, the pavement helps lessen flash flooding during heavy rains and can replenish shallow urban aquifers. The approach represents a shift from traditional impermeable asphalt to a structure that simultaneously addresses heat, water management, and infrastructure durability.
