Morocco plans regional companies to distribute produce
The Moroccan government intends to establish six regional companies to manage the bundling and distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables across the country's primary cultivation areas. Announced by Minister of Economy and Finance Fouzi Lekjaa, the initiative is a component of the ‘Generation Green 2020-2030’ strategy.
The Moroccan Interprofessional Federation for Fruit and Vegetable Production and Export (FIFEL) has expressed enthusiastic support for the proposal. Zakaria Hanich, chairman of FIFEL, noted that the sector has long advocated for such measures to regulate the distribution chain.
The plan aims to reduce the number of intermediaries, narrow price discrepancies between regional markets, and limit excessive profit margins between growers and consumers. Currently, significant price gaps exist between wholesale markets, such as Inezgane, and the final prices paid by consumers in cities like Casablanca and Rabat.
