Morocco presents crime prevention strategies in Abu Dhabi
At the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, Morocco presented its data-driven approach to crime prevention and criminal justice. Hicham Mellati, Director of Criminal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, detailed a prospective penal policy focused on human-centric justice and the anticipation of criminal phenomena.
A central component of this strategy is the National Observatory of Crime. This institutional tool is designed to support the development and evaluation of penal policies using reliable data. The Observatory utilizes a participatory approach, bringing together judicial, security, and institutional actors, including the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Supreme Council of the Judicial Power, the National Security, and the Royal Gendarmerie. It also collaborates with national anti-corruption bodies and universities to integrate scientific research into crime analysis.
Morocco is also working toward implementing a national crime map to geolocate infractions and track their frequency. On the social front, the country has strengthened judicial social assistance, employing over 500 social workers, and has established specific mechanisms to support women, children, and victims of human trafficking.
