Morocco reaches record date production levels

Morocco's date production is expected to reach approximately 177,000 tons during the 2026-2027 agricultural season, marking an 11 percent increase from the previous year. This record growth is attributed to improved climatic conditions and the entry of newly planted areas in expansion zones into the production phase.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Khalid Hatimi, noted that national market demand is roughly 250,000 tons annually. The Ministry is working to bridge this gap by managing imports and exports, enhancing product value, and improving storage conditions.

The production is part of the ‘Green Generation 2020-2030’ strategy, which aims to increase annual production to 300,000 tons and exports to 70,000 tons by 2030. The date palm sector provides significant economic value, exceeding 3 billion dirhams and supporting approximately 2 million Moroccan citizens, directly or indirectly.

Regionally, the Draa-Tafilalet region leads national production, contributing 83 percent of the total. The sector also plays a critical role in combating desertification and preserving oasis heritage.
