Morocco rejects repatriation of youth killed after Ceuta border tragedy

Moroccan authorities have refused the last-minute repatriation of the body of Mohamed Said Arif, a 21-year-old man who died following the mass migration attempt at the Tarajal pier in Ceuta. Despite having all necessary documentation and permits, the funeral vehicle was blocked at the border and forced to return to the military hospital in Ceuta.

Arif was one of several individuals identified by the Spanish Civil Guard following the late July tragedy, where thousands attempted to cross into Ceuta. While he did not die during the initial surge at the pier, he passed away shortly after being transferred to the hospital.

His case is part of a larger humanitarian crisis involving multiple deceased migrants. Identified victims include Younes, Abdeselam, Nordinne, Abdelmomim, Ibrahim, and Salma. Many of these individuals were young adults from various Moroccan cities, with the exception of a 74-year-old man. Currently, bodies remain in a temporary morgue at the Ceuta military hospital as families await repatriation, which has faced ongoing obstacles from Moroccan authorities.
