Morocco renames Tiznit‑Dakhla Expressway after Donald Trump

Morocco Donald Trump Tiznit‑Dakhla Expressway Western Sahara Mohammed VI

King Mohammed VI of Morocco officially renamed the 1,055‑kilometre Tiznit‑Dakhla Expressway, which runs through the disputed Western Sahara region, to the "Donald J. Trump Highway" (also referred to as the "President Donald J. Trump Highway"). The decision was communicated in a letter dated 2 July 2026 and was made public in early August 2026.

The highway, completed in 2025 at a cost of about $1 billion, is a key infrastructure project linking Morocco’s north with its southern provinces, including the Dakhla Peninsula. The renaming honours former U.S. President Donald Trump for his 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, a move that also facilitated Morocco’s normalization of relations with Israel. Trump thanked the king on his Truth Social platform on 26 July 2026, saying it was a great honour and expressing hope to travel the entire route.
