Morocco reports decline in multidimensional poverty
According to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index report by the United Nations Development Programme and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, 6.4 percent of Morocco's population—approximately 2.398 million people—live in multidimensional poverty for the 2024–2025 period.
The report highlights a significant decrease in multidimensional poverty compared to 2011, when the rate stood at 17.3 percent (roughly 5.681 million people), and 2017–2018, when it was 7.9 percent. While the overall rate has declined, education has emerged as the primary driver of deprivation, accounting for 46.8 percent of the index's total value during the 2017–2018 period, compared to 24.4 percent for health and 28.8 percent for living standards.
The index measures simultaneous deprivations across health, education, and living standards, including specific indicators such as nutrition, child mortality, years of schooling, school enrollment, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, and housing.
