Morocco seeks expanded Israeli defence cooperation

Morocco is planning to acquire additional Israeli-made defence systems as military cooperation between the two nations continues to deepen. Since the normalization of relations via the 2020 Abraham Accords, Israel has become a significant supplier of air defence, unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and precision fires to Morocco. This growing partnership is partly driven by Morocco’s regional rivalry with Algeria and has been institutionalized through a 2021 Memorandum of Understanding covering intelligence sharing and military training.

Simultaneously, diplomatic dynamics involving Spain have emerged. Dana Erlich, the Israeli chargé d’affaires in Spain, recently reaffirmed that Spain remains an ‘important and historical ally’ for Israel. These comments come amid tensions regarding the enclave of Ceuta. Erlich expressed surprise at accusations from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez regarding disinformation and clarified that Israel recognizes Spanish control over Ceuta, noting it was one of her first official visits upon arriving in Spain.
