Morocco sees surge in electric and hybrid vehicle sales
Morocco is experiencing a significant shift in its automotive market toward electrification. According to the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM), sales of electric and hybrid vehicles surged by 74.4% by the end of September 2026, totaling 29,522 units. This growth has increased the combined market share of these eco-friendly vehicles to 17.8%, up from 11.4% in the same period in 2025.
Specific segments driving this trend include conventional hybrids, with 11,821 units sold, and plug-in hybrids, which saw a 120.3% growth rate. While diesel vehicles still hold a 63.5% market share, this is a decrease from approximately 71% the previous year.
Strategically, Morocco is positioning itself as a global hub for electric vehicle production. The country benefits from its proximity to major industrial zones, the Tanger Med port, and free trade agreements with both the European Union and the United States. Additionally, Morocco holds approximately 70% of the world's phosphate reserves, a key component for battery development, alongside significant cobalt reserves.
