Morocco women's political representation faces systemic barriers

Recent assessments of women's political participation in Morocco highlight significant barriers to effective representation despite legislative frameworks. The Democratic Association of Moroccan Women released preliminary results from its barometer regarding the 2026 legislative elections, noting a wide disparity in how political parties implement equality commitments. While some parties scored high, others showed minimal progress across 15 indicators, including nomination governance, campaign support, and protection from political violence.

Complementary findings from the Al Zahra Forum for Moroccan Women identified specific systemic challenges, such as the influence of financial requirements for party endorsements. Some female members reported being asked for money to secure nominations, allegedly under the guise of campaign financing, which critics argue undermines merit-based participation.

The data also indicates a lack of women in influential local district positions. Women accounted for only 15.89% of total nominations and headed just 7.49% of local lists. Furthermore, observers noted a trend of 'political inheritance,' where female candidates often hold familial ties to existing parliamentary members, potentially limiting the diversity of political leadership.
