Morocco's Brahim Díaz penalty miss decides AFCON final

In the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final held in Rabat, Morocco's star forward Brahim Díaz attempted a Panenka penalty in extra time. Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved the kick, and Senegal secured a 1‑0 victory, denying Morocco the title they had waited 50 years to win. Díaz, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, was visibly upset, later apologising and expressing his disappointment.

The incident also resurfaced after Morocco's women's team drew 0‑0 with Senegal in the 2026 Women’s AFCON group stage, where Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye saved two penalties from Morocco's Yasmin Mrabet. The women's draw allowed Morocco to advance to the quarter‑finals while Senegal were eliminated.

Both matches highlighted the rivalry between the two nations and sparked social‑media debate linking the men's penalty miss to the women's missed chances.
