Morocco's first F-16V Block 72 completes inaugural test flight

The first F-16V Block 72 fighter jet destined for the Royal Moroccan Air Force has successfully completed its inaugural test flight in the United States. This aircraft is a unique variant within the F-16 family, as it is the only one powered by Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engines, whereas the standard Block 70 variant typically uses GE engines. This specific configuration is intended to facilitate maintenance and operational integration with Morocco’s existing F-16 fleet.

The flight marks a major milestone in a procurement program initiated in 2019, following U.S. State Department approval for Morocco to acquire 25 new F-16V Block 72 aircraft and upgrade 23 existing fighters. Mike Shoemaker, Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, stated that the flight is an essential step toward strengthening the country’s future aerial capabilities and supporting regional stability.

Beyond aircraft delivery, Lockheed Martin is working to bolster Moroccan industrial technical skills through a partnership with Maintenance Aéro Maroc. This includes the development of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center in Benslimane, covering over 8,000 square meters, designed to provide heavy maintenance support.
