Morocco's Omar Hilale highlights UN Resolution 2797 on Sahara
Moroccan Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, stated that UN Security Council Resolution 2797 marks a major shift in the treatment of the Moroccan Sahara issue. He characterized the resolution as moving from a logic of management to one of settlement, describing it as an irreversible turning point compared to previous council resolutions.
Hilale noted that the resolution establishes the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the sole basis for resolving the regional dispute, placing it at the center of the political negotiation process. For the first time, the document includes the autonomy status within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
The resolution reaffirms the responsibility of four parties—Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario—to engage in good faith toward a definitive political solution. This has facilitated direct discussions in Washington and Madrid under the co-presidency of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and the US Permanent Representative to the UN.
