Morocco's relations with Germany and Spain remain positive despite Ceuta tensions

Moroccan Ambassador to Germany Zohour Alawi said the partnership with Germany is in a "golden age", highlighting a trade volume that exceeded €7 billion in 2025 and noting Morocco as Germany's second‑most important partner in Africa. The remarks were made at a ceremony in Berlin marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties and recalling historic links dating back to the 16th‑century German community in Safi.

Relations with Spain are also described as strategically close, built on the joint declaration of 7 April 2022 and cooperation on security, migration, investment and energy. However, the July 30 incident in Ceuta revived concerns, with disputes over Spanish legislation on citizenship for Sahrawi‑born individuals and disagreements on customs arrangements for Ceuta and Melilla. Analysts suggest these issues could signal underlying strains, even as both sides publicly emphasize continued collaboration.
