Morocco's ties with Spain spotlighted by PM's Mallorca visit and record remittances
Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch made a high‑profile visit to Palma de Mallorca, arriving on a private jet and staying at the Four Seasons resort. The trip, costing hundreds of thousands of euros per night, was abruptly ended after King Mohamed VI ordered his return.
At the same time, data from the Bank of Spain show that remittances sent from Spain to Morocco have more than tripled over the past decade, reaching about €1.6 billion in 2025. The flow now accounts for roughly 13 % of all remittances sent from Spain and about 7 % of Morocco’s GDP, underscoring the growing economic interdependence between the two neighbours.
