Morrisons appoints Mohsen Ghasempour as first chief AI officer
Morrisons has appointed Dr. Mohsen Ghasempour as its first chief AI officer to lead a new central data science and artificial intelligence function. Ghasempour, who holds a PhD in computer science, joins the supermarket from Kingfisher, where he previously scaled AI operations across Europe. He also held senior technology roles at The Hut Group.
Reporting to CEO Rami Baitiéh, Ghasempour will oversee AI and data strategy with a focus on customer growth, operational efficiency, manufacturing excellence, and commercial strategy. The appointment is part of a broader turnaround strategy for the retailer, which recently saw a 3.2% increase in like-for-like sales over a 13-week period ending July 26.
The supermarket is currently leveraging a partnership with Google Cloud, utilizing tools such as Gemini, Vertex AI, and BigQuery to implement in-store product finders. Ghasempour is scheduled to officially take up his post on October 1, 2026.
