Instacart launches AI‑powered Caper smart trolleys at Morrisons in Preston, UK
Instacart has begun trialling its Caper smart trolley, an AI‑driven shopping cart, at a Morrisons supermarket in Preston, Lancashire. The deployment marks the North American firm’s first retail partnership in the United Kingdom. The carts automatically recognise items placed inside using computer‑vision cameras, weigh fresh produce with an integrated scale and display a running basket total on a touchscreen. The screen also offers product recommendations, real‑time promotion details and the ability to scan a Morrisons More Card for loyalty savings. Shoppers complete payment by scanning a barcode shown on the trolley at a dedicated checkout lane.
Instacart’s Chief Connected Stores Officer David McIntosh said the Caper trolleys “represent a new era for in‑store grocery shopping”, while Morrisons Productivity Director Gordon Macpherson described the trial as a step toward a more enjoyable and budget‑friendly shopping experience. The technology has previously been rolled out in the United States and Australia with retailers such as Kroger, Wakefern and Coles.
