Morrissey calls on Spain's Prime Minister to end bullfighting during Iberian tour

British singer Morrissey wrote a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urging the abolition of bullfighting, describing the practice as a “barbaric” tradition and asking the government to act. The appeal was made while the artist was on his Iberian tour, which includes concerts in Barcelona, Madrid and Porto. The request coincides with a parliamentary proposal to strip bullfighting of its protected cultural‑heritage status, backed by a public petition that has gathered more than 715,000 signatures.

Morrissey, a long‑time vegetarian and animal‑rights activist, performed at the Super Bock Arena in Porto on 1 August as part of his Make‑Up Is a Lie Tour, promoting his new album released in March 2026. The album received mixed reviews, scoring 59/100 on Metacritic. Earlier, he also played at Madrid’s Movistar Arena on 29 July, and his tour dates in Barcelona were announced for early August. The concerts have drawn attention both for the music and for his outspoken stance on animal welfare.
