Morrissey urges Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez to ban bullfighting

British singer‑songwriter Morrissey sent an open letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez days before his Barcelona (July 25) and Madrid (July 29) concerts, asking the leader to use his influence to end bullfighting in Spain. In the letter he wrote, “Please use your influence to do something the world will love: end this barbarity.” The appeal, backed by animal‑rights group PETA, coincides with a parliamentary citizen initiative titled “No es mi cultura,” revived on 15 July by 52 deputies and already signed by more than 715,000 Spaniards. The proposal seeks to strip bullfighting of its protected cultural‑heritage status, after a previous attempt failed due to a PSOE abstention. Morrissey’s anti‑bullfighting stance is long‑standing; his 2014 song “The Bullfighter Dies” and earlier pleas to the Pope have highlighted the issue. The combined pressure from the artist, NGOs and legislators is reigniting debate over the tradition’s future in Spain.
