Morrompulli sanitary landfill project faces delays
Technical studies for the Morrompulli sanitary landfill in the Los Ríos region of Chile are expected to conclude by the end of this year. These studies, conducted by the Valdivia municipality, are necessary to allow the company Desarrollo País to proceed with complementary technical analyses. The new facility is intended to replace the existing Leñadura landfill, which is scheduled to close in March 2028.
Despite the urgency, local planning officials have projected that the new landfill may not begin partial operations until 2030, four years later than previously committed. Delays are attributed to the transfer of project ownership from the Regional Government to the municipality, which requires re-evaluation of technical recommendations.
The project faces several administrative hurdles, including the need to secure land titles and obtain approval from the Regional Council. Additionally, the municipality must manage the project's environmental qualification resolution, which is set to expire in November 2028.
