Mors, Denmark's mussel industry faces closure over new EU sorting rules
Mayor Jens Dahlgaard of Mors warned that tightened EU sorting requirements could force the local mussel industry to shut down, threatening hundreds of jobs, tax revenue and tourism tied to the Limfjord's shellfish heritage. The industry’s main operator, Vildsund Blue, has suspended loading while the new manual sorting and registration rules are clarified.
Environment Minister Maria Reumert Gjerding defended the measures, saying they are needed to ensure better monitoring of the fishery’s impact on the Limfjord and to meet EU control standards. Opposition politicians, including Venstre’s group leader Jesper Balle Kristensen, criticised the rules as risking the island’s cultural identity and the annual seafood festivals, and called on the national government to intervene.
Both local officials and the industry urge the Danish authorities to find a solution that protects employment and the regional economy while complying with environmental goals.
