Morsø Municipality faces budget crisis and proposed service cuts

Morsø Municipality is facing significant budgetary challenges, with officials projecting a need to find 60 million DKK by 2031. To address this deficit, the municipal council has proposed several austerity measures, including the closure of a primary school and two nurseries. The proposed closure of the Lundkjærvej nursery in Nykøbing is expected to save 1.4 million DKK annually starting in 2029.

Mayor Jens Dahlgaard has rejected calculations from the think tank CEPOS, which suggested that municipalities could find millions in savings through administrative restructuring. Dahlgaard argues that comparing different municipalities is flawed, stating that Morsø is a small municipality where certain essential services cannot be scaled down in the same manner as in larger urban areas.

Due to high public interest in the budget negotiations, the first reading of the budget has been moved from the town hall to Arena Mors to accommodate the expected crowd. Local residents have expressed shock and opposition to the proposed cuts, particularly regarding childcare services, noting a contradiction between the municipality's goal of attracting families and the closure of local nurseries.
