Mortal Kombat 1995 film marks 31 years since release

The 1995 film adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, marks over three decades since its release. Produced on a $20 million budget, the film grossed nearly $125 million worldwide, making it the most successful video game adaptation of its time until 1998.

To secure a PG-13 rating and appeal to a wider teenage audience, filmmakers worked with the MPAA to modify the game's inherent violence. This resulted in creative adjustments, such as depicting Sub-Zero being impaled by an icicle rather than more graphic fatalities.

Production took place between August and December 1994, with significant filming occurring in Thailand. Notable production details include the creation of a million-dollar animatronic model for the character Goro, which required between 13 and 16 operators. The cast featured Robin Shou as Liu Kang, Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung.
