Mortal Kombat III status remains uncertain, says director
The future of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ film franchise remains uncertain following the release of ‘Mortal Kombat II’. Director Simon McQuoid stated that a third installment is still going through its ‘life cycle’ and is currently under evaluation by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
McQuoid noted that he is not certain if he will return to direct a third film, as he is currently developing other projects, including a grounded character study. While screenwriter Jeremy Slater had previously indicated work had begun on a follow-up script, the official status of a sequel has not been greenlit.
In discussions regarding the production of ‘Mortal Kombat II’, McQuoid revealed that a key creative decision—incorporating visual cues like flames in the sky to track tournament progress—was actually a suggestion from the studio. He noted that while he was initially hesitant, the change helped clarify the narrative stakes for the audience.
