Morten Messerschmidt and Martin Lidegaard face off in defamation trial

Morten Messerschmidt, leader of the Danish People's Party, and Martin Lidegaard, leader of the Social Liberal Party, are appearing in the Frederiksberg Court regarding a defamation lawsuit.

The legal dispute stems from comments made by Lidegaard during a political debate in November 2025. Messerschmidt alleges that Lidegaard made defamatory statements suggesting he supports the internment and deportation of thousands of citizens based on their faith or skin color. Specifically, Messerschmidt's legal team argues that Lidegaard's remarks equated his political positions with 'ethnic cleansing' and 'racist-motivated internment.'

Unlike many defamation cases, Messerschmidt is not seeking financial compensation or fines. Instead, the lawsuit seeks a legal recognition that the statements violated provisions regarding honor and defamation in the Danish penal code. Lidegaard is seeking acquittal, maintaining that his comments were within the bounds of political discourse.
