Mortgage brokers expand presence in Greek housing market
Mortgage brokers are playing an increasingly significant role in the Greek housing market by acting as intermediaries between borrowers and banks. These specialized consultants assist clients throughout the entire loan process, from initial research and product comparison to the preparation of funding files and final disbursement.
By navigating complex and time-consuming approval processes—which can often exceed six months—brokers aim to simplify the experience for borrowers, particularly young people seeking their first homes. They also analyze fine print to protect clients from potential future financial risks.
The Bank of Greece is responsible for licensing and supervising these companies to ensure market transparency and legality. Currently, there are 29 mortgage brokers operating in Greece, with six newly licensed in 2025. According to Andreas Protopapas, General Manager of FinTHESIS, mortgage intermediation accounted for approximately 12% of housing loans in 2025, a figure expected to reach 15% in 2026.
