Mortgage rates rise sharply in Colorado and across the US
Mortgage interest rates are experiencing significant fluctuations across the United States. According to a WalletHub study, Mississippi has recorded the largest increase in mortgage rates this year at 1.92%. In contrast, North Dakota has seen a decrease of 3.68%.
Colorado has experienced the second-largest increase in the country, with rates rising by 1.60% to an average of 5.33% in 2026. While Colorado ranks 26th in overall mortgage interest rates, it holds the 18th position for the most mortgage debt added.
In the broader market, 30-year fixed mortgage rates were reported at approximately 6.49% in mid-2026. Experts note that high insurance premiums and low resale listings are narrowing the margin for error for buyers. Common pitfalls for consumers include shopping for properties before establishing a firm budget, which can lead to significant financial strain over the life of a loan.
