Mortgage stress grips Australia's Hunter region as households struggle
An estimated 39,600 households in New South Wales' Hunter region are now in mortgage stress, a 7.2% rise over three months. The region accounts for a large share of the national picture, where 421,700 households across 80 postcodes are under similar pressure.
The fastest‑rising postcode is Rutherford, where mortgage‑strained households more than doubled in a year, with 6,783 families in the June quarter versus 3,295 a year earlier. Analysts attribute the surge to property prices outpacing local wages, higher living costs, larger mortgages and rising interest rates. Digital Finance Analytics principal Martin North said, "The Hunter Region is a good microcosm of the Australian property story," adding that further Reserve Bank of Australia rate hikes are expected to increase pressure.
The trend reflects broader cash‑flow pressures across the country, with many owners facing the risk of default as prices rise faster than incomes and inflation persists.
