Morumbi stadium celebrates 66 years since inauguration
The Morumbi stadium, officially known as Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, marks its 66th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, São Paulo Futebol Clube is paying tribute to Peixinho, the player who scored the first goal at the venue during its inaugural match against Sporting CP on October 2, 1960.
Originally constructed in a remote, forested area of São Paulo's southern zone, the stadium's development began in 1952. Due to financial requirements, the club opted to inaugurate the stadium before its full completion. The first match saw a crowd of 64,748 people, with São Paulo securing a 1-0 victory.
Over the decades, the stadium has evolved from a massive venue with an initial capacity of over 149,000 to its current capacity of approximately 66,795. It has served as a major hub for both football, including historic Libertadores victories, and large-scale musical entertainment.
