Mount Benson receives new smoke-detection cameras for wildfire monitoring

Mosaic Forest Management has installed advanced smoke-detection cameras atop Mount Benson to improve wildfire detection in the Nanaimo area. Developed by Vancouver-based SenseNet, the system provides 360-degree coverage with a range of up to 50 kilometres.

The technology is designed to automatically zoom in on potential smoke plumes and can distinguish between smoke, fog, clouds, and different types of fires, such as campfires. Once a plume is detected, the system undergoes a verification process within minutes before an alert is sent to Mosaic’s internal team. If confirmed, the B.C. Wildfire Service is notified to mobilize a response.

This installation marks the first use of such technology on Vancouver Island. The monitoring range extends beyond Mosaic’s land, providing safety benefits to nearby landowners and the broader community. The initiative follows a period where 35 wildfires were recorded on Mosaic’s operating areas in coastal British Columbia as of August 21, 2026.
