Russia's online voting system hit by massive cyberattack during elections FAST-MOVING
During Russia's three-day parliamentary elections for the State Duma, the Central Election Commission reported a massive and continuous cyberattack targeting Moscow's online voting system. Ella Pamfilova, head of the commission, stated that while the attacks were intense and ongoing, IT specialists have successfully repelled them, allowing electronic voting to continue normally.
Beyond the capital, Russian authorities reported other security incidents. A sabotage attempt was detected in the Far East, affecting communication lines in regions including Sakhalin, Magadan, Kamchatka, and Chukotka, though services were subsequently restored. In the Krasnodar region, a polling station was relocated following a drone attack that damaged its building. Additionally, in the Luhansk region, power outages forced some polling stations to use backup electricity.
Amidst these technical disruptions, officials warned of the threat posed by AI-generated deepfake videos intended to discredit the electoral process. President Vladimir Putin, who cast his vote online, characterized the elections as a collective contribution to Russia's victory. The election is being held under significant scrutiny, as the liberal Yabloko party was barred from the ballot by the Supreme Court, and voting is also occurring in occupied Ukrainian territories.
