Moscow power plant fortified after massive drone attack

Workers have begun installing concrete blocks around Moscow Thermal Power Plant No. 8 on Volgogradsky Prospekt to fortify the facility against drone strikes. These barriers are reportedly intended to support anti-drone nets.

The fortification follows a massive drone attack on Moscow on September 20. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin characterized the incident as the largest attack on the capital to date, stating that Russian air defenses intercepted 450 drones. Despite these interceptions, several targets were hit, including the Gazprom Neft Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, a warehouse complex in Sofyino, and a thermal power plant in Dzerzhinsky.

Ukraine confirmed the strike on the Moscow Oil Refinery, noting that fires were reported at the site. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the operation utilized various domestically developed drones, such as the FP-1, RZ-100, and Palyanytsia. Russian authorities faced criticism for failing to issue public warnings, such as sirens or SMS alerts, during the attack.
