Moscow to host 2030 World Weightlifting Championships FAST-MOVING

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced that Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships. This marks the first time an Olympic sport has been awarded a major world championship in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The IWF decision, made during its congress in China, also designated several other host cities for upcoming international competitions: Ahmedabad, India, will host the 2029 senior championships, while Pristina and Caracas will host the 2028 youth and junior championships, respectively. Ningbo, China, is scheduled to host the 2026 senior competition.

The move follows the IWF's decision in June to fully reintegrate Russian and Belarusian athletes into international competitions. While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also eased restrictions for Russian athletes, the decision to host a major event in Moscow has drawn criticism from some sporting officials, including the president of the Swedish Weightlifting Federation, who expressed concern regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
