Moses Itauma loss to Filip Hrgovic sparks debate over conditioning and coaching

Following Moses Itauma’s ninth-round stoppage loss to Filip Hrgovic, boxing figures are debating the role of conditioning and coaching in the 21-year-old’s first world title attempt. Barry McGuigan noted that Itauma’s inexperience and unsustainable pace led him to exhaust his stamina after winning the early rounds convincingly. McGuigan suggested that Itauma and his coaching team are responsible for failing to manage the fight's tempo.

Promoter Eddie Hearn defended Itauma’s trainer, Ben Davison, stating that Davison is “one of the best trainers in the world” and noting that a trainer cannot fight the match for the athlete. Hearn also suggested that Andy Ruiz Jr. could be a potential future opponent for both Itauma and Hrgovic, provided Ruiz performs well in his upcoming bout.

While Itauma showed significant talent and early dominance, his inability to sustain energy against the veteran Hrgovic resulted in a stoppage loss. Hrgovic retains his IBF belt and is expected to defend it against mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez.
