Kenya President Ruto announces faster retirement benefit payments for teachers
President William Ruto has announced a new directive to ensure teachers and other public servants receive their retirement benefits within 10 days of retirement. This policy, expected to take effect within three months, follows the implementation of a Pension Management Information System by the Teachers' Service Commission and the National Treasury.
In addition to pension reforms, the administration is introducing a new career progression framework for teachers within the next two weeks. These revised guidelines aim to reduce the time required to reach the highest professional grade from 30 years to 18 years. Other measures discussed include a review of school capitation rates, enhanced medical schemes for educators, and a commitment to revert to a two-year salary review cycle once the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is completed.
