Kenya political tensions rise ahead of 2027 elections

Kenya's political landscape is intensifying ahead of the 2027 General Election, marked by disputes over the 2022 election results and shifting opposition dynamics. Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has renewed claims that Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election, prompting sharp criticism from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and President William Ruto. Wetang’ula questioned Kenyatta's decision to hand over power to Ruto if he believed the results were rigged, while Ruto urged leaders to exercise restraint and avoid making contradictory or incoherent remarks that could cause public unrest.

In the opposition, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua predicted that one principal within the United Opposition coalition will depart before 2027, though he pledged his own loyalty to the eventual single candidate. Meanwhile, former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria argued that opposition unity is unlikely to materialize, predicting a crowded field including William Ruto, Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Edwin Sifuna.

Separately, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has demanded that Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen clarify remarks regarding alleged voter registration activities in Uganda linked to Kenya’s electoral process. Muturi called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate these claims to protect Kenya's sovereignty and electoral integrity.
