Mosquito bite attraction tied to human scent chemicals and beer consumption

Scientists have identified that female mosquitoes use a complex mix of sensory cues—carbon dioxide, body heat, humidity and skin‑produced volatile compounds—to locate their hosts. Research on Aedes aegypti found that certain scent molecules, notably 1‑octen‑3‑ol, make some people more attractive, and that pregnant women in their second trimester emit higher levels of this compound.

A separate study observed that individuals who drank beer became significantly more appealing to mosquitoes, likely because alcohol raises body temperature, increases exhaled CO₂ and alters skin chemistry. Participants who consumed beer were up to 1.35 times more likely to be bitten than those who drank water.

The investigators emphasized that blood type, skin colour or eye colour do not influence mosquito preference. They also warned that climate change is expanding the range of disease‑carrying species such as the tiger mosquito, increasing the public‑health relevance of these findings.
