Mosquito eradication debate underscores disease burden and ecological risks
Mosquitoes are responsible for roughly 760,000 human deaths each year, accounting for about 17 % of all infectious diseases worldwide, including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika. Of the roughly 3,500 mosquito species, only about 100 bite humans, and just five species cause around 95 % of human infections.
Scientists are exploring genetic‑drive technologies that render mosquitoes infertile, a method tested by the Gates‑funded Target Malaria project in several African nations. The programme faced a setback when the military government of Burkina Faso halted field trials amid civil‑society criticism and disinformation. Another approach uses the bacterium Wolbachia to suppress populations of Aedes aegypti or reduce their capacity to transmit dengue.
Ecologists note that mosquitoes serve as food for insects, fish and other animals and may pollinate certain plants, though the extent of these roles is not well understood. The debate pits the potential public‑health gains of eliminating disease‑carrying mosquitoes against concerns about biodiversity loss and unintended ecological consequences.
