Mosquito Insecticide Resistance Threatens Disease Control in Europe

Genetically modified mosquitoes have been released worldwide since 2019, with more than a billion "self‑limiting" individuals deployed to curb disease transmission. Limited independent data exist on their long‑term impact, and a newer biotechnology called gene drive could permanently alter or eradicate wild mosquito populations, raising concerns about irreversible ecosystem changes.

Scientists now report that mosquito populations are evolving resistance to the insecticides that have long been a cornerstone of disease‑prevention strategies. Dr. Rohit Lakhwani notes clear evidence of resistance developing, especially among species such as the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) that have expanded into parts of Europe as temperatures rise. Mosquitoes achieve resistance through nervous‑system mutations, enzyme production that neutralises chemicals, and changes to their outer cuticle, diminishing the effectiveness of sprays, treated nets and other chemical controls.

The convergence of gene‑drive research and growing insecticide resistance heightens uncertainty about future control of diseases like dengue, malaria, Zika and chikungunya, which together affect millions of people each year.
